new02.gif (2409 bytes) SDORC Board election results After over two years of leading SDORC as its President, Ed Stovin has decided not to run for another term. Ed stepped up to the plate under difficult circumstances and performed admirably. Many thanks to Ed for a job well done. Ed will be replaced by the newly-elected Chuck Hattaway. Chuck has held various positions on SDORC's Board of Directors for several years, and we know he will make an excellent President. Click here for complete election results.

Clear Creek Area Closure! Recreation groups expressed dismay at the surprise announcement that federal agencies are closing approximately 31,000 acres of public land in Central California. The Clear Creek Management Area ("CCMA"), located in San Benito County and managed by the Bureau of Land Management ("BLM"), is one of the most popular off-highway vehicle recreation sites in the West.

From the BLM website:

"Based on the results of the Environmental Protection Agency’s CCMA Asbestos Exposure and Human Health Risk Assessment, the Bureau of Land Management Hollister Field Office has issued a Temporary Closure, effective May 1, 2008, to all forms of entry and public use for approximately 31,000 acres of public lands in the Clear Creek Management Area (CCMA) to protect public health and safety."

Last day to register to vote is May 19! Remember, if you don't register, you can't vote. And if you don't vote, you don't have the right to complain about the outcome. When told that there were a considerable number of off-roaders living in his city, and they wanted a local off-road park, a local politician said "Yeah, but they don't vote." Let's prove him wrong!

Fee Program Changes Upcoming for the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), El Centro Field Office, has announced changes to the fee program for the ISDRA. Of most interest to off-roaders is that, in order to discourage waiting until arriving at the dunes to purchase permits—which causes unnecessary traffic jams—the fees will be increased for on-site purchases. Fees bought from off-site vendors or over the Internet will remain the same as last season. Click here for details.

Canal road from dune buggy flats to 5 mile drop blocked! The Coachella Valley Water District has closed and locked the gate on the canal road going from the Dune Buggy Flats Area to 5 mile drop. The roads in between the old canal and the operating canal have been blocked off. The reasons given are the damage it causes to their road and liability issues. They will be locking the gate at highway 78 and the canal too. The drops will remain open. For further information click here.

New wood regulations at Ocotillo Wells SVRA Effective January 1, 2008, Campfires at Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area and Heber Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area must contain only untreated wood products free from metal, petroleum products, and other toxic substances. In addition, no persons shall possess, ignite, or burn pallets of any kind including those made of wood, fiber, or plastic within these recreation areas.

camping cookbook! To help raise money to fight to keep public land open for OHV recreation, SDORC will publish a camping cookbook. Once published we will be selling the books for $10.00. The books will be available at off-road shows and various other events. We are asking off-roaders to send in their favorite outdoor camping recipes; recipes that are easy to make in the outdoors, or to make at home and take with you. Please include your name and where you live, and send to jangeraghty@cox.net. We need them as soon as possible.

SDORC MERCHANDISE! SDORC has designed items with the SDORC logo for people to purchase. Go to www.zazzle.com/janmae and search for "San Diego Off-Road Coalition" to see what is available. Select from an assortment of shirts, mouse pads, tote bags, key chains, magnets, stickers and coffee mugs, and SDORC receives 7% of your purchase price to help keep your riding areas open. The shirts should be customized to add your name. If you click on "Customize it" you may see warnings indicating that the images are larger than originally designed and may not reproduce well. You may safely ignore those messages; the shirts print beautifully. If you have any questions please contact Jan Chaney at jangeraghty@cox.net
