Adopt-A-Highway Cleanup Day
On Saturday, January 24th. Over two dozen volunteers showed up for the San
Diego Off-Road Coalition's first Adopt-a-highway cleanup.
Two miles of freeway shoulder on each side of highway 8 from the Buckman
Springs rest area East are now clean.
Helpers toiled, non- stop, from shortly after 9:00 AM until about 1:30 PM. A
mammoth mountain of trash was collected! The mountain included all of the
regular trash items like tires, bottles, cans, and household debris. It also
included some interesting stuff like hub caps, a cylinder head, a car hood,
two recording devices for refrigerator trucks, and an Oscar Mayer wiener
whistle.
After the cleanup. A barbecue was held for participants at the Corral Canyon
Off-Road Park. Burgers and dogs were gobbled down by the hungry workers
along with Jan's fabulous baked beans.
As a grand finale to the event, many volunteers, who brought along their
motorcycles and quads, hit the trails for a late afternoon ride. The
experienced riders tackled the gnarly tough trails while the kids and
grandfathers rode up to the lookout tower. The sunset found us loading up to
head home. Exhausted and stuffed, everyone had a great time!!!!
Thanks to all who helped out!
We'll do it again in 6 months, We'll keep you posted!
